How-to disable the DCOM service in Windows 2000.
A quick guide written by Matthew Genelin
For starters, run the Dcom Configuration utility: Start -> Run -> type "dcomcnfg" like this:
Now Un-check the "Enable Distributed COM on this computer" check box so it looks like this:
Now you can virus scan. My favorite virus scanning site uses a product from Trend Micro. Check out:
www.trendmicro.com
Click on "Enterprise" tab.
Click on "Free Online Scan" link.
Click on "Scan now" link.
Choose "United States" as your country and press "Go".
Choose "Yes" to the Trend Micro Verisign Certificate. This will begin the download of the web client virus scanner.
Equivalently, you could go to this site and start the
scanner too.
After the scan, you can download the Microsoft patch. It's available at:
TechNet Article for other operating systems affected by the MS Blater Worm.
Windows 2000 Patch Availability webpage for MS Blaster Worm.
Direct Download of patch from Microsoft.
You are infected with the worm if you see this message at any time:

Now you can re-enable the DCOM service, if you'd like. DCOM is used for some MS Access Database and MS Excahnge Mail
applications. If your office does not use these applications, consider leaving DCOM disabled.
